Congressman John Lewis received the Life and Liberty Award from the NHSCS on May 18, 2012, for his work in helping to protect human rights and secure individual liberties. With Lewis in the photo is Ruby Sales, a former Alabama resident who was saved from an attacker's bullet in 1965 when Jonathan Daniels, a former Keene, NH resident, pushed her out of the way and was hit instead. Daniels, who was an Episcopal seminarian, travelled to Alabama to participate in the march from Selma to Montgomery. He died from the bullet. He was awarded a posthumous Life and Liberty Award.
